A brief history of the Seelie and Unseelie Courts: According to one story, sometime in Prehistory, when the race of man was young and still knew the language of the animals, a star in a solar system far, far away from ours was dying. As it started to explode, it flung debris across the universe. Some of the comets fell from the heavens and landed in a small village of hunter-gatherers. Another story is that during the battle in heaven between God's angels and Satan's demons, Satan himself left a mirror or other object in God's dwelling place before he was defeated by St. Michael the Archangel and thrown into hell. When God found this mirror, he shattered it, and one of its pieces fell to earth. All we know is that something mystical landed there at some point. Intrigued by this mysterious object, some of the humans and animals drew close to it. The moment one of them touched the comet, it burst into a million pieces. The people and animals then began to notice that they had special powers, and were the first living beings to ever use magic. Over thousands of years their descendants adapted and evolved, growing in magic and slowly losing their mortality, until they became the ancestors of the magical beings that we are familiar with today. No law except survival of the fittest governed them. Tribes of warring races fought each other and gained dominance over each other. Tribal leaders then starting giving themselves names like "King", "Duke", and "Prince." Eventually, one species of powerful fairy folk who are now called "the Ancient/Old Ones" (their true name is forgotten) conquered all of the tribes of Europe as their land and their royal family made what is now called Athens the center of Imperial Power. The humans in the surrounding areas worshiped the members of the families as gods, and they began to rely on the early Greeks' belief I them. The family lived for thousands of years feeding off of the human's worship of them. They greedily sucked up the human's blind devotion like vampires do blood, which made them almost immortal. They became fat and lazy tyrants. The power corrupted them. Only their children remained alert and they were the only ones left in the family who could still harness magic without the aid of human faith in them. Even the hundreds of Ancient Ones outside the royal family became greedy. Then, around 1500 BCE, one little boy, just one, in Athens publicly proclaimed his disbelief in the "gods." At that moment all of the Ancient Ones died except the royal family, who all still believed that they were immortal. All except the two children in the family: twin sisters Lady Titania of Elphame and Lady Mab of Nicnevin. They realized that they needed to find a better source of magic to save the family. Titania truly wanted to save her beloved family. However, Mab had her own selfish motives. She hoped that their father would pass down the crown to her. Meanwhile, all of the little clans of Europe reemerged and started regaining lands taken by the Ancient Ones. Chaos flooded the ancient world. Thousands of innocent mortal bystanders perished, which dwindled their faith in the Ancient Ones even further. The twins went their own separate ways, frantically searching the globe, until Titania found the crystallized form of the fallen object that created magic under a barn in Mesopotamia. Totally unaware of its origin, she sensed its power and contacted Mab, who was atop Mt. Olympus at the time, immediately. Mab pretended to be as overjoyed as Titania to save their family, but tried to steal the crystal in the night. Luckily, a black cat started mewing loudly and woke Titania. Mab then cursed the black cat with bad luck. Titania, heartbroken by the betrayal and greed of her wicked sister, engaged Mab to a fight-to-the-death where Titania won by just a grain of luck. Naively, she forgave her twin and spared her only to be attacked by a vengeful Mab again. Infuriated, Titania used the crystal to banish Mab from what remained of the Ancient Ones' empire, which had only small pockets in Greece this point, all the rest was gobbled up by other magical creatures. Titania then arrived at Athens, and found the family hiding underground. They were all sick and dying. She tried to save them, but her father wouldn't allow it. So she wept as she watched them die and realized that in order for peace and harmony on earth, she needed to separate mortals from the magical creatures, for the good of all nature. Magic and mortality were such strong forces that if they were combined they would kill each other off. So she used the crystal to regain all of the magical creatures' trust, and when they saw that she wasn't as corrupt as her family, the most of the magical royals in the world signed a pact that made Titania their High Empress. They called her "Seelie" which means "holy". However, the nobles saved many powers to themselves, so that no one person held all of the power. Thus the Seelie Court was created. Some of the other princes who didn't join the court still saw the need to be unified, so they formed the "Unseelie court." They named Mab their Queen. The Unseelie started hunting mortals for sport, and Titania was worried about their growing power. So she used the crystal to trap Mab and six of the most influential members of the Unseelie court in a parallel universe we now call Fairyland or the Enchanted Forest. That act shattered the crystal into thirteen pieces. She used six to make six powerful weapons that she gave to the six trust-worthiest members of the Seelie Court. Each of the six ruled a great city which was connected to Fairyland and the real world at the same time. Their job was to protect their city and keep the Unseelie ruler from escaping into the real earth. Most of the magical peoples, Seelie and Unseelie alike, emigrated from this world to the Enchanted Forest for a chance at a better life. The few that remained fled to the hills and lived underground. The hill people formed a method of keeping humans oblivious to their true nature by applying "glamour." Those who couldn't decide wither to become one of the hill-folk or a citizen of the Enchanted Forest flocked to the Seven Great Cities, each with easy access to both worlds. But the story doesn't end there. Trapped in Titania's Great City under the Acropolis, Mab devised a plan to escape. First, she stole the seven extra pieces of the crystal. Then, she sent one to each of the other Unseelie Rulers in the other six cities. Then she, along with the other six, cast a spell that made a wormhole in each city. A wormhole, or portal, is a rare doorway from one world to another. Mab planned to escape with her cronies to our world and wreak havoc on all of humanity. Fortunately, Titania and her other six nobles stopped them at the last minute and took the crystals back. The wormholes were created, but sealed. Only the seven remaining crystals could open them. So Titania made her own plan. She searched the world for the seven most virtuous human children. She then made little golden pieces of jewelry and toys for them out of the crystals for each of them. It was their jobs to protect the crystals, and pick a successor before they died. So at all times at least seven people believed in magic. If nobody believed in magic, the Seven Cities would fall and the Enchanted Forest would be separated from this world and the hill-folk would die. So now it is the Unseelie Court's new goal to regain the crystals to force Titania into giving their former power back. And if that day ever comes, say your prayers...
